Description

A variety of undergraduate research opportunities are available at the UA Remote Sensing Center, a multi-disciplinary research center focused on the design and development of miniaturized microwave sensors for integration on manned and unmanned aircraft and satellites. The center develops both the RF and digital hardware required for radar system design as well as the necessary signal processing and geophysical retrieval algorithms for fine resolution measurements of snow, soil and ice. Mechanical considerations of large-scale antenna structures, physical integration of sensors onto airborne platforms, piloting of drones and flight planning of airborne missions as performed in-house. The center thus offers the opportunities for students to be involved in the entire development chain of radar remote sensing systems. The center is comprised of multiple faculty in the Electrical and Computer Engineering (Dr. Gogineni, Dr. Yan, Dr. Taylor, Dr. Gurbuz), and Aerospace and Engineering Mechanics departments (Dr. O'Neill). Supervisor(s) will be determined based on students interest and background. No prior radar experience required - just a strong work ethic and inquisitive nature. Although this current posting is for volunteer and credit opportunities, these do have the opportunity to evolve into paid positions if the student's background is matched to specific project requirements and tasks. Fully funded Graduate (M.S./PhD) Research Assistantship Positions are also available upon graduation, should students be interested in continuing their work.
