Stephen WoskiDescription
Using non-natural nucleoside analogues, we explore the structures of nucleic acids (DNAs and RNAs), molecules that play central roles in the storage and expression of biological information. Our approach utilizes synthetic chemistry to prepare fluorescent nucleosides. Incorporation of these residues into short strands of DNA and/or RNA will produce molecules that report the presence of complementary nucleic acid sequences. When these sequences are unique to a pathogen or disease state, the probe molecules can be used diagnostic medical tests.
