Phylogenomics and Evolutionary Genomics of Marine Invertebrates

I'm looking to recruit a computer scientist interested in biology and bioinformatics to work on a project that aims to improve the methods used to identify orthologous genes (genes related by speciation and not gene duplication). My collaborators and I previously developed a program to this end (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3825643/) and I am looking for a top-notch student interested in helping to further develop this software or to write a new, more advanced program. This work is expected to result in one publication describing the approach and software that would be led by the student researcher as well as opportunities to collaborate on other publications employing this software. ...

Using new media technologies to help children become more proactive in their health and well being.

This is a longitudinal study that is ongoing at area elementary schools. Any student who is selected to be involved in this research project will have to go through ethics certification (IRB). I am revising the iPad app that is being used in the present study to track children's food consumption, and I am developing health literacy/health intervention material to be used during health sessions at area schools. Data collection will take place in December, so any student interested will need to be in Tuscaloosa through approximately Dec. 20th. ...

Human Capital Retention

Using personality assessment tools, we examine the motives, abilities, and perceptions that make students more or less successful in the university environment, resilient to setbacks, and likely to become socially invested in their environments. Students can expect to be part of literature searches, survey administration, and data analysis. This position is well-suited for individuals considering advanced degrees in organizational behavior, human resource management, organizational psychology, and personality psychology....

Viral transmission along river systems affecting Pacific salmon

IHNV is a virus that affects Pacific salmon. It is especially of concern in hatcheries where juvenile fish are raised for release in the Columbia River basin. There can be up to 90% mortality of a juvenile hatchery cohort. We are trying to identify the predominant pathways by which IHNV is spread to juvenile salmon in hatcheries. We have IHNV testing records from hundreds of sites in the Columbia River basin and have GIS layers of site locations and river systems. The project is to calculate the river distance between hatchery sites. For example, if sites A, B, and C could have exposed site D to IHNV, how far would water or a fish have to travel between sites A and D, sites B and D, or sites C and D?...

Biomedical sensors

We have several projects that deal with development and testing of biomedical instrumentation. Depending on the project, the students may participate in several related research activities: 1) Sensor design, manufacture and testing. Practical hands-on tasks that often need 3D design skills, working with plastics, resins and other materials. 2) Signal processing and pattern recognition of signals collected by our sensors. The sensors are used in the human studies and the collected data need to be processed to recognize events of interest in the sensor data. Either direction can be used as a credit in research scholars program or for conference paper preparation....

Synthesis and characterization of shape/size-controlled metal oxides nanopowders

The research objective of this project is to advance the fundamental understanding of structural and chemical features (morphology, size, atomic-level structure, etc) of metal oxide nanomaterials in order to develop stable catalysts with high reducibility at low temperatures for the application in automotive catalytic converter. Using low-temperature hydrothermal method, students will prepare a series of high surface-area metal oxides nanopowders with a focus on controlling particle morphology and size in such a way that highly catalytically active crystal faces are exposed on the particle surfaces. X-ray diffraction (XRD) will be used to establish the overall crystal structures of the nanopowders. The overall reducibility and catalytic act...

Optimization in big data: algorithms and applications

This is a research position with Dr Yangyang Xu in optimization and its applications. The data in modern applications is becoming extremely big. The data size grows significantly faster than the computer development speed. That means running classic methods on modern computers cannot handle modern problems with huge-scale data. Therefore, more advanced algorithms are required. The students will be advised to read recent papers, implement existing and/or new optimization algorithms, and also do applications in statistical and machine learning, image processing, and finance. If you are interested, please contact with Yangyang Xu at yangyang.xu@ua.edu. A CV and transcript are required....
